Disc Bulge at L4-L5

Sir, My wife aged 43 is suffering from back pain and leg pain(both not severe)for the last 2 months. She is a clerical staff in a govt. institution. We consulted an orthopedic doctor and he advised MRI Lumbosacral Spine scan. As per the report "Disc bulge seen at L4-5 indenting anterior sac and narrowing bilateral neural recess". Other readings are normal. He advised to take rest for some days with pelvic traction. But the problem persists. Is there any ayurvedic or yoga treatment for this which will cure this?

Ayurvedic Medicine

Disc bulge is seen after a slight tear of the outer most fibers of annulus fibrosis. It causes pain and the compression of the adjacent nerves leads to pain in the lower limbs. Ayurvedic medicines and treatments like vasti, oil massage, kati vasti and pizhichal will be effective to reduce the pain.

Ayurvedic medicines like Sahacharadi Kwath - 15ml with 60ml of warm water before food twice daily, Simhanad Guggulu and Vatari churnam can be taken for a month and then reviewed. Divya Pidantak Tailam can be applied externally.

Include fiber, complex carbohydrates, spinach, broccoli and low fat milk. Reduce excess refined flour, cold refrigerated foods, excess sugar, oil and salt. Yogasanas like Marajaryasana, Dhanurasana, Matsyasana, Trikonasana, Bidalasana, Padahastasana, Vajrasana, Paschimottasana and Pavanamuktasana will be beneficial. Try to to maintain proper postures that will help to prevent more pressure in the spine. Lying in an inversion table will be beneficial.

Hello,Disc bulge refers to the protrusion of disc (that provides cushion between two vertebrae) from ring. The disc bulge produces pressure on nerve roots emerging out hence causing pain to the areas where these nerves supply.Ayurveda correlates it with kati shool caused by vitiation of vata dosha that causes obstruction.Ayurvedic medicines recommended are as follows-1.Mahayograj guggul- 1 tablet thrice a day with luke warm water after meals. It acts as analgesics and also nourishes the tissues.2.Ashwagandha arishtha- 30ml in equal amount of water twice a day after meals.3.Rasnadi churan- 1 tablespoon twice a day with luke warm water after meals.4.mahanaryani oil- for local application twice a day 5.Shallaki mr- 1 tablet twice a day after meals. In panchkarma anuvasana and asthapan basti with ashwagandha kwath and ksheer bala oil should be administeredto reduce vatik obstruction and thus reduces the inflammation. Along with basti, abhyanga with ksheer bala tail and kati basti with aswagandha oil to reduce local inflammation.Yogic exercises like halasan, surya namaskar, sarvangasan, gomukhasan and trikon asan are highly advisable according to strength and undersupervision of yoga teacher.
